An eCommerce website design is a completely different ballgame and it has almost nothing in similarity with a normal website barring the fact that it requires programming or coding, hosting and website content.

Simplicity

Many websites are pretty complex, with tons of information, flash work, added graphics, fancy fonts and lots of frills here and there. There should be minimal design but very craftily enhanced layout. The layout of the webpage is all that matters in an eCommerce website. The user is expected to make a purchase and keeping it simple drives a sale. Too much on the plate and the user would be a little flabbergasted and would get completely perplexed.

Sales Page/Landing Page

A normal website can have certain types of web pages but an eCommerce website should have a sales page or a landing page. Every product or service on sale should have a standalone sales page unless different variants of the same product are being sold. Having too many products jumbled up together on a page is not conducive to sale. A customer can get easily lost in the list of products and in the process would end up not buying anything.

Clarity

Cognizable fonts, clear cut messages, simple numbers indicating the amounts and efficient summaries of the purchase are all that is needed and not arduous colors, multiple shades or ambitious styling of the page.
